I found the solution for me in the comments to that fix!' Go to your skyrimprefs.ini and change this settingfShadowBiasScale=0.6000That will fix all the outdoor shadow striping. As for indoor, I have researched it quite a bit and its not as easy as a fix as the outdoor shadows and happens to be caused by the poor engine that Skyrim uses. Some people claim mods like this work and others dont see a difference.
Good luck' - iBeas7nI'm really happy because I experience this in other games too, like World of Warcraft and I thought my graphics card was broken or something.
So what's up with the shoddy shadows in skyrim? Is there a working fix? Or is this just something that I will have to put up with?If it was just the shoddy jagged edges of the dynamic shadows out doors, I could probably learn to live with it. But what really gets my goat is the flickering/striped shadows on my character and NPC's. It looks awful and is really distracting. Shadows indoors and in dungeons look fine, characters included, so I hope this is something that can be fixed with a couple of tweaks? Please oh please help. Skyrim is looking so very pretty on my new rig (have been playing around with modding and have just about settled on a final build to start a new character/game) but am loath to play through with the shadows as bad as they are.Have tried playing around with the in game graphics settings to no avail.
Have also tried a couple of fixes involving editing the SkyrimPrefs.ini file, again to no avail. Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.Cheers. Skyrim Nexus is a website that contains modifications that you can implement into Skyrim, the link I have provided below takes you to Skyrim Tweaks Complete. This is a small tutorial and.ini tweaks you can do to enhance the visuals for Skyrim, it does assume that you have a beefy system as it sets the graphical quality past the default Ultra settings. The link below is another at Skyrim Nexus that attempts to tweaks shadows for those with a medium PC:After taking a look, this is another one for those with a powerful PC, he seems to have explained things better than the first link and it also attempts to fix the flickering problem.Edited May 29, 2012 by fabmanuk.
If you have a PC get the latest Steam update, there are settings that really improve the shadows but even then they are not that great.-edit- if I wasn't at work I'd send you mine.Good idea to list yours specs so settings can be tailored to your machine. Also do you update your drivers? Some work better than others, AMD 12.3 works better than 12.4Hi. Thanks for the feedback mate.Specs are as follows.I5 2500KGigabyte Z68 MBHD7870 (currently using Catalyst 12.4 might roll back to 12.3 to see if that helps)Steam currently installed on SSDGraphics options set to ultra preset, 1080p resolution, with AAx8 and AFx16. Have installed the official HD texture pack and have been playing around with a crap load of different mods. Find the nexus mod manager far superior to the steam work shop so far.

It is way too hard to find what you are looking for in the steam workshop. The link below is another at Skyrim Nexus that attempts to tweaks shadows for those with a medium PC:After taking a look, this is another one for those with a powerful PC, he seems to have explained things better than the first link and it also attempts to fix the flickering problem. Thanks for the links. Will check them out and see if I can find some details on the various fixes and give them a go.On a side note. I have finalised the list of mods I want to use for my next play through. The thing is I have loaded and un- loaded a lot (a shit load really) of mods and wanted to return my game to a 'fresh' install, before loading the mods I have settled on. What is the best method of doing this?
I though of deleting the local game files of my Skyrim steam install and obviously un-installing nexus mod manager. But is there a sound method of guaranteeing a nice clean install?Again thanks to everyone for the replies. Easiest way I found is if you have a fairly decent internet connection is to go to the data folder and delete everything but large the.esm and.bsa files. Then go into steam and verify files and you'll download around 200mb of miscellaneous files.Your system is obviously capable of ultra settings. It is recommended to disable AF through Skyrims options and enable it through AMD Catalyst, it causes problems using Skyrims. You can tweak the ini file so you can see a greater distance ugrid=5 should become ugrid=9. Becareful though, once you've increased the range and save during gameplay you cannot revert back; also do not go over 9 as it causes problems.
With the Ultra shadow tweaks it will greatly increase the load on your GPU dropping frame rates, however your card can handle it. Edited May 29, 2012 by fabmanuk. Thanks Fabman.Deleted the whole skyrim folder in steam, un-subscribed to all the mods in the workshop, un-installed nexus mod manager, and finally deleted the skyrim folder in my games. Carried out a clean install off the game disk, and re installed the HD texture pack.Am currently going through the process of re-installing nexus mod manager and the mods I want.

Have decided to leave the steam workshop alone and just use the nexus to simplify things. Have read through the links you posted on shadow fixes and have decided to try out the medium quality fix. It seem very similar to other fixes I have tried in the past, but think where I went wrong was not setting the.ini files to read only after editing.Fingers crossed. Will update with results later.
